October is National Orthodontic Health Month!
While the kiddos are getting their costumes ready and eyeing up mountains of trick-or-treat candy, our team at Ernstberger Orthodontics is celebrating one of our favorite times of the year: National Orthodontic Health Month.
Now, I know what you’re thinking—“Dr. Seth, isn’t orthodontics just about getting straight teeth for picture day?”
Well, yes, a great smile is an awesome bonus. But as an orthodontist, my main job is working with the foundation nature gave you to build a healthy, functional bite that holds up for the long haul. So let’s break down what orthodontic health really means, how we handle our youngins, and why it’s never too late for Mom and Dad to get in on the action!
It’s About Function First
When teeth are crowded, twisted, or overlapping, keeping them clean becomes a daily battle.
Tight spots love to trap food and plaque, making brushing and flossing a total chore for kids and adults alike.
Getting your bite properly aligned isn’t just cosmetic, it’s genuine preventive health care:
- Saves Your Enamel: When your bite doesn’t meet correctly, certain teeth end up doing double duty. That uneven pressure leads to premature chipping and wearing down the teeth nature gave you.
- Keeps Your Gums Happy: Straight teeth give your toothbrush and floss total access, keeping plaque away and making those routine dental check-ups a breeze.
- Eases Jaw Strain: A misaligned bite forces your jaw muscles to work overtime to chew. Balancing your bite stops that unnecessary strain in its tracks.
Kiddos & Phase 1: Smart Timing Beats Big Problems
One of the most common questions parents ask me is: “Dr. Seth, when should I actually bring my child in?”
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a kid’s first evaluation around age 7. Now, don’t worry—that does not mean every 7-year-old is walking out of our office with a full set of braces!
Phase 1 (interceptive) care is all about proactive timing. Around age 7 to 10, your child has a mix of baby and adult teeth, and their jawbone is still super flexible and growing. By catching things early, we can:
- Guide Jaw Growth: We can gently widen narrow arches or fix crossbites while their body is naturally growing anyway.
- Make Room for Adult Teeth: Intercepting early creates vital space so incoming permanent teeth don’t get trapped or severely crowded.
- Simplify Phase 2 Later: Fixing structural issues now makes future treatment down the road faster, easier, and much more predictable.
And if your youngin isn’t ready for treatment yet? Simple! We just keep an eye on em and monitor their growth every few months at zero cost to you until the timing is just right.
The EO Moms & Pops Program: Your Turn!
